About Dark Horse Ceilidh Band:
Dark horse ceilidh band is: a high-energy, high-quality ceilidh band with much experience in playing for dance. As an indicator of the esteem with which the band is held among its peers, it is worth noting that whenever other local bands are a member short, we as individuals are always the first to be asked to sit in with them. We are a yorkshire based band covering the north and west of the county, going south as far as wakefield and as far east as malton. Longer distances can be arranged but would involve extra costs.

michael jary. Caller and virtuoso concertina player who has that rare ability of being able to call and play at the same time. His humorous and good-natured presentation puts everyone at ease. He explains the dance very clearly as he takes the dancers through the steps in a walk-through before each dance commences.
marie jary. Marie’s accordion gives the band a really full sound. Like her sister nicky, our fiddler, she has been playing since childhood. She is also michael’s wife making this mainly a family band.
nicky ward. Nicky is a terrific fiddle player who brings so much energy to the band. In addition to her ever-increasing array of fiddles she occasionally plays guitar and mandolin. Singing isn’t normally part of a ceilidh band’s activities but as nicky sings so beautifully we are able to fulfil the occasional requests we do get for songs.
ray black. Ray plays guitar and mandolin, his main role being to provide rhythm for the dance but he usually sneaks in a wild tune or two on his mandolin between dances.

Ceilidhs are great fun for people of all ages and experiences. Whether you are having your first go or are an experienced dancer makes no difference, our caller will have complete beginners dancing like experts.
forget any fears of making mistakes; perfection isn’t the aim as that would be boring. When things do go wrong it often makes it all the more entertaining, and after all, the real aim is to have fun.
we will play at weddings, birthdays, fundraisers, club socials, etc. In fact just about anything except funerals!
